Arequipa, Peru is a city of nearly a million people located at around 7,500 feet above sea level in the middle of the Andes Mountains. The eastern and northeastern skylines of the city are dominated by the presence of three volcanoes, two of which are at approximately 20,000 feet above sea level. Mining, tourism, and agriculture are the dominant contributors to the regional economy. Due to an increase in the discovery of natural resources in Southern Peru and Northern Chile, an economic boom has impacted in city in the last four or five years, bringing disposable income to some of the population of Arequipa. With this income has come the presence of modern shopping malls and supermarkets. Both did not exist prior to this increase. It is also a city of contrasts, as the modern fashion, technology, and change in mindset that comes with new wealth exists alongside the presence of long-lasting religious, economic, and social practices.
Currently Extreme has a church planting team in Arequipa working in the Cercado district. The Church La Puerta Abierta AQP is celebrates their first anniversary on Mothers Day. You can follow them on Facebook at La Puerta Abierta AQP, and read some of their stories on their blog or on our main page.
There are still opportunities to serve with this group. Check out our Short Term Project page.
